I couldn't help but respond to a speech by Senator Robert Byrd, Democrat of West Virginia, who thought the "Truth will Emerge" about the actions of the Bush Administration, by sending him an e-mail (there was no response from Byrd). I've edited my remarks for clarity (the heat of the moment is over--a copy of my original rant and rave is available).

I found your remarks about King George and Irag interesting, and somewhat reminiscent of Margaret Chase Smith vs. Joseph McCarthy in the early days of the Cold War, but I have to disagree with one major aspect of your message. According to the Americans I've been hearing, the truth is not sought by the majority (and certainly not the media or members of Congress) who are quite content to cringe in fear and find comfort in that fear (the motto of the Greatest Generation, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself" has been replaced by the creed of King George, "We must fear everyone, everywhere, at all times").

I never personally feared a terrorist attack before 9/11, and I do not personally fear such an attack now. What I do fear are scary people such as King George and his faithful followers, with the power of the F.B.I. and the C.I.A. behind them, who have turned the country into a nation of cringing cowards "proudly" ready to hide behind plastic sheets and duct tape, and prepared to bestow "another four years" to the undeserving.

Democrats, as the minority party, also cringe in fear of King George because he is given credit for "leadership". When I was growing up King George's display of leadership was known as the school yard bully. And worse, he has encouraged Americans to be school yard bullies by allowing (encouraging) them to feel better about themselves (and ignore the freedoms they have lost) by beating up on the French without mentioning that the French helped this nation's forefathers win the American Revolution and later gave this nation the Statute of Liberty that those same bullies cite as a symbol of freedom.

Sorry Senator Byrd, the "Truth" will not emerge because Americans don't want to hear it.
